The assignee and family may not speak the language of the country of assignment. Language immersion training is one method to help prepare them for the transfer. This training may consist of intensive or other training shortly before departure and for some period after arrival in the host country. The employer usually pays for language lessons for the assignee and spouse either through reimbursement of actual costs or through the granting of an allowance. Company language training policies vary widely.
