This provision recognizes that spouses/partners who accompany expatriates on assignment experience significant disruption in their personal lives and careers. Companies may elect to provide employment assistance for spouses/partners who are legally able to work in the host country. However, often it is not possible for the spouse/partner to obtain a work permit. In that case, companies may pay for some kind of career continuation or enrichment activities, such as volunteer or educational endeavors.
